World Environment Day Celebration with the Little Guardians of Sundarban
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by joining hands with the youngest voices of the Sundarban to tackle one of the planet’s most urgent challenges: plastic pollution.
The day began with an engaging, interactive session designed especially for children. Through relatable stories and practical examples, PFRI introduced the significance of World Environment Day and the global movement to end plastic pollution. Children learned how plastic waste threatens the Sundarbans’ unique ecosystem, harming not only the land and waterways but also the flora, fauna, and local communities that depend on this fragile habitat. The enthusiasm among the children was contagious as they pledged to become eco-warriors in their daily lives. They discovered that even small, consistent actions like refusing single-use plastics, reusing containers, and choosing sustainable alternatives can collectively create a big impact, especially in sensitive regions like the Sundarbans.
The event culminated in a spirited clean-up drive around the children’s homes. Together, participants collected plastic waste and discussed simple, sustainable alternatives to reduce plastic use in everyday life. This hands-on activity not only fostered environmental responsibility but also empowered the children to lead by example within their families and communities. This joyful and insightful experience underscored a powerful message: change begins with awareness and grows through action. By equipping Sundarban’s youth with knowledge and practical tools, PFRI is nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards committed to beating plastic pollution and safeguarding their natural heritage
