World Wetland Day at Indian Sundarban, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal
On this #WorldWetlandsDay, we continue our deep-rooted work in the Indian Sundarban, a global biodiversity hotspot, shaped over generations by indigenous knowledge and adaptive practices.
Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation and South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE) have been walking alongside the indigenous communities of the Sundarban for years, strengthening traditional practices through science-led, nature-based solutions:
🌾 Conserving indigenous salt-tolerant rice genotypes through natural farming
🌱 Building community capacity in mangrove nursery management and restoration
🦀 Promoting decarbonised aquafarming and sustainable crab fattening through the box method
🔬 Conducting ongoing research on mangrove ecosystems, soil, and water health
🌿 Establishing medicinal gardens and regenerative agriculture models
💼 Creating alternate, wetland-friendly livelihoods
Together, we are reinforcing ecological integrity by recognizing local knowledge as the foundation of food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience.
On this World Wetlands Day, we renew our pledge to protect and restore the Sundarban as a living cultural landscape, where communities, tradition, and wetlands thrive together.
